Best film Michael Mann has ever done, its just brilliant. Sure, the first 20 or so minutes are pretty standard action, but from then on the film really got its hooks into me.
The story of the actual real 'characters' lends itself brilliantly for a movie, and I like how Mann doesn't try and change the story but relies on its own power. His casting is also excellent, being able to put together two of the biggest male stars on the planet together in Johnny Depp and Christian Bale, the actors' amazing performances brought the film onto a level of the classic genre epics like Goodfellas.
Bale is excellent as Purvis, but it's Depp's performance that really sealed the deal for me. So many layers of depth to his portrayal of Dillinger, and a much better performance than his overblown Pirates of the Carribean scene-stealing (as fun as that is). The supporting cast continue the great performances, Stephen Graham as Baby Face being one of my favourites, along with Marion Cotillard's as Dillinger's missus
Basically, the film is a perfect summation of the gangster genre in that it doesn't break the rules, it just turns it into an art form. And that last set piece was fantastic, I thought, it held the tension even though everyone knows what happens.
